One of France's Beaux Villages, Turenne is a picture postcard village just 45 minutes from the gîte and within easy reach of many a Dordogne holiday rental.
Turenne has commanding views over the local Corrèze countryside and invites you to wend your way up and up to explore. The higgledy piggledy houses, secret alleyways and underground rooms make for an interesting amble en route to the chateau at the top. The buildings range in age from the 13th to the 18th century and at times you do feel a bit like you're in the middle of a Harry Potter film set.
We took our trip on a chilly February Sunday morning so there were very few people around, meaning that we had the place to ourselves. We did notice a few restaurants and little shops so I expect that it has quite a different feel in the summer months.
The views from the top of the promontory are impressive, with the quaint village rooftops in the foreground and the hills of the massive central in the distance - you can see for miles!
Turenne isn't far from the beautiful small city of Brive, and combining the two would make for a lovely day out for those planning on visiting the area :)
